Flat vs 3D Puff Embroidery
Flat and 3D puff are the two most common ways to embroider a hat. Here is how they differ and how to pick the right one for your logo.
- Flat: crisp, detailed, versatile
- 3D puff: bold, raised, structured
- Puff suits simple, bold logos and block text
- Flat suits fine detail, small text, and gradients
- We proof either way before stitching
What flat embroidery is
Flat embroidery stitches your logo directly onto the fabric at a single level. It is the most versatile option — it handles fine detail, small text, outlines, and tight gradients cleanly, which makes it the safe choice for most logos.
What 3D puff embroidery is
Puff embroidery places a layer of foam under the stitching so parts of the design rise off the hat. It reads boldly from a distance and gives trucker and rope hats that structured, retail look — but it works best on thick, simple shapes and block lettering.
How to choose
If your logo is bold and simple — a thick monogram, a clean wordmark, block letters — puff makes it pop. If it has small text, thin lines, fine detail, or lots of colors, flat will reproduce it more accurately. When in doubt, we will recommend the better fit on your proof.
When puff does not work
Puff struggles with very small text, thin strokes, and intricate detail because the foam needs room to sit under the stitches. If a logo has those elements, we will either run it flat or adapt just the bold parts to puff.
FAQ
Common questions
- Does 3D puff cost more than flat?
- Puff can carry a small upcharge on some styles because it is an extra step. We confirm any difference on your quote.
- Can you mix flat and puff on one hat?
- Sometimes — bold elements in puff, fine detail in flat. We will tell you if your logo is a good candidate on the proof.
- Will puff work on my logo?
- Bold, simple logos and block text are ideal. Small text and thin lines are better in flat. Send it over and we will advise.
- Which lasts longer?
- Both are durable commercial embroidery and hold up for years. Neither cracks or peels the way printed logos can.
